At SwimEasy, we believe that swimming is not a luxury or an optional extracurricular activity, it is a fundamental life skill that belongs to every single child, regardless of circumstance, background, or physical and neurodivergent needs.
We are immensely proud to announce the continuation of our partnership with the Darcey Sunshine Foundation for another year. Through this vital initiative, we provide fully funded, free swimming lessons to children with Additional Support Needs (ASN) as well as children from challenging financial backgrounds across our community.

Expanding Reach: Spartans Community Foundation & Active Schools
True community impact requires strong, trusted networks working together. Alongside our work with the Darcey Sunshine Foundation, our outreach across North Edinburgh continues to expand through collaborative partnerships:
- Spartans Community Foundation: Partnering directly in North Edinburgh to reach families who face barriers to regular aquatic sports, ensuring access to life-saving swimming instruction right on their doorstep.
- Active Schools Edinburgh: Working together to deliver free, structured swimming lessons during school holiday programmes specifically designed for children with Additional Support Needs (ASN). These holiday sessions provide continuity, sensory regulation, and fun during periods when school-based routines are paused.
The Heart of the Initiative: Opportunity Without Stigma
Far too often, community initiatives inadvertently isolate the very children they set out to support. Distinct “charity sessions” or separate tracks can unintentionally create stigma.
Our philosophy across all community collaborations operates on a different standard: seamless integration.
- The Right Setting for the Individual Child: Every child enters our curriculum precisely where they can flourish. Depending on sensory, cognitive, or physical requirements, learners are placed either into our dedicated 1:1 private tuition or into our small-group class structures.
- Complete Dignity and Inclusion: There are no separate classes, no distinct sticker, and zero stigma. The children we support step onto the poolside as equal members of the SwimEasy family, working through the same progressive milestones alongside their peers.
- Specialised Coaching Competency: Our teachers are trained to adapt to diverse learning styles and sensory considerations, ensuring every session builds genuine water confidence in a calm, nurturing environment.
A Legacy of Commitment: Decades in Scottish Aquatics
Community investment is not a short-term trend for our team; it is woven into the very fabric of SwimEasy’s history.
Founder Gail Smith has maintained an active affiliation with Scottish Swimming for close to five decades, dedicating a lifetime to the development, standardisation, and accessibility of swimming across Scotland. That multi-decade heritage guides our belief that swimming education must serve the entire community, ensuring standards remain uncompromising while opportunities remain open to all.
Why Accessible Aquatic Education Matters
Drowning remains a significant accidental risk for young people, and statistics show that children with additional support needs and those from lower-socioeconomic areas face disproportionate risks around water.
Learning to swim provides benefits that ripple far beyond physical safety:
- Sensory Regulation: The gentle hydrostatic pressure of warm water provides a calming sensory environment for neurodivergent learners.
- Physical Literacy and Strength: Buoyancy removes joint strain, allowing children with physical mobility challenges to build core strength, coordination, and endurance.
- Everyday Confidence: Mastering a stroke milestone builds lasting self-belief that transfers directly into school and family life.
A Shared Mission for Scotland’s Young Swimmers
Water safety is a collective community responsibility. By uniting with the Darcey Sunshine Foundation, the Spartans Community Foundation, and Active Schools Edinburgh, we remain committed to ensuring that financial barriers or additional support needs never stand between a child and water competency.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners and the families who trust us every week. Together, we are building a safer, more inclusive future in the water.
