April 2025: Nobody’s Fool in the Pool

Teacher Focus: Building Water Safety

This month, prioritise teaching water safety skills. Incorporate fun activities like “spot the hazard” or role-playing scenarios where children learn how to react in emergencies. Building these skills ensures children feel confident and capable while staying safe.

Parent Tips: Simple Safety Practices

April is a great time to reinforce poolside safety. Teach your child to always stay within arm’s reach, recognise the deep and shallow ends, and practice safe entries and exits from the pool. These habits will prepare them for a lifetime of safe swimming adventures.

Swimming is about more than strokes and speed; it’s about understanding the water and staying safe within it. Teaching water safety early gives children a sense of independence and resilience. It’s not just about learning to swim; it’s about equipping your child with skills that will keep them safe for life.

Water skills are based on jumping in, pulling out, sculling, floating, diving, somersaults, opening eyes when under water, releasing the holding of the breath and blowing out when under water. These skills when mastered form the basis of the swimming strokes once one begins to travel through the water.
