The Art of the “Level”: Why Every Swimmer’s Journey is Unique
As parents, one of the first things we look for in a swimming programme is the “Level.” We want to know exactly where our child sits, are they a Beginner, a Learner, or an Improver? At SwimEasy, we take great pride in our ability-based grouping, but there is a beautiful “secret sauce” to how our classes actually run that goes beyond just the label on the timetable.
Even within a “Beginner” class, no two children are at the same point in their journey. You might have one child who is just beginning with streamline, while another is inches away from mastering the breaststroke kick required to move up to the Learner level.
So, how do we ensure every child gets exactly what they need without anyone falling behind or getting bored? It comes down to Mastery through Differentiation.
1. The Power of the “Rotation”
A common sight in our lessons is the high-energy flow of repeats and rotations. We don’t believe in children standing at the edge of the pool waiting for their “turn” for too long.
By keeping the group moving, our teachers create a continuous loop of practice. This high repetition is where the muscle memory happens. While the whole group might be working on the same core skill, the teacher (and our fantastic assistants) can tweak the challenge for each child as they pass by.

2. Individualised Learning in a Group Setting
This is where our teachers truly shine. In a mixed-ability group, “differentiation” is the name of the game.
- For the newcomer: The teacher might focus on buoyancy and breath control while streamlining.
- For the swimmer ready to move up: The teacher might add a technical challenge, like extending the reach or perfecting the hand entry.
It’s the same lesson, but a bespoke experience for every swimmer. With assistants in the water, we can provide that “minimal manipulion” support for those who need it, while the lead teacher pushes the pace for those ready for the next level.

3. Feedback: The Bridge to the Next Level
We believe a child learns best when they understand the why behind the what. Our teachers provide constant, real-time feedback.
Instead of just saying “good job,” you’ll hear our coaches giving specific cues: “Try to keep your eyes on the floor to stay flat,” or “Remember, long ‘rocket’ arms for this lap!” This helps the children take ownership of their progress. When a swimmer knows exactly what they can do, and exactly what “ribbon skill” they are working toward, they stay motivated and engaged (it’s not just about stickers).

The SwimEasy Philosophy
Every child’s path to becoming a confident, safe, and technical swimmer is a marathon, not a sprint. By focusing on individualised goals within a team environment, we ensure that the “Beginner” who just started and the “Beginner” about to graduate both leave the pool feeling like champions.
We aren’t just teaching a class; we are coaching individuals who happen to be in the same water.
