A Reflection from the 90s: Why Second-Generation Families Trust SwimEasy

There is no greater vote of confidence in swimming teaching than generational trust. When a child learns to swim with an instructor, grows into adulthood, and years later brings their own children back to the exact same programme, it proves that the foundation built decades ago was solid, enduring, and transformative.

This month, we received a special testimonial from Fraser, an Edinburgh parent whose family journey with SwimEasy spans over twenty-five years.

In Fraser’s Words: From Pupil in the 90s to SwimEasy Parent

“I have very positive memories of attending swimming lessons as a child. I was taught by Gail Smith, attending SwimEasy first at James Gillespie’s High School and then George Watson’s swimming pool when SwimEasy was first founded in the late 90s. The lessons helped me develop confidence in the water and learn an important life skill. Lessons were fun and helped me progress and build confidence over time.

From my own positive experience, it was an easy decision to send my two children, Harrison and Lachlan, to SwimEasy. They are developing strong swimming skills, confidence, and water safety awareness.

They benefit from the small classes and the patience and support of their swimming teachers. A particular highlight is that we can reflect upon their progress as they collect stickers in their SwimEasy passport. It is exciting to watch them progress as they reach a level of competency and confidence allowing them to move to the next class.”

Decades of High Standards: Nothing is Left to Chance

When Gail Smith founded SwimEasy in the late 1990s at pools like James Gillespie’s High School and George Watson’s College, her vision was clear: swimming tuition should never be chaotic, overcrowded, or intimidating. It needed to be progressive, warm, and built on meticulous stroke mechanics.

Hearing Fraser describe his sons Harrison and Lachlan thriving under the exact same ethos decades later highlights why our core standards remain unchanged:

  • In-Water Guidance & Small Classes: Just as Fraser experienced in the 90s, our teachers remain directly beside swimmers in the water to offer immediate support, reassurance, and tactile corrections.
  • The SwimEasy Passport to Successful Swimming: Progress is transparent and rewarding. Earning milestone stickers gives children tangible ownership of their learning journey while keeping parents fully informed.
  • Lifelong Water Safety: Teaching children to swim is about far more than pool lengths, it is about instilling calm, reflexive water competence that protects them for a lifetime.

A massive thank you to Fraser, Harrison, and Lachlan for being such a wonderful part of the SwimEasy family across generations!
