In many traditional swim programmes, learning to swim follows a rigid, linear conveyor belt: children spend months exclusively on front crawl, add backstroke later, touch briefly on breaststroke, and treat butterfly as an elite mystery reserved only for competitive club squads.

At SwimEasy, our teaching philosophy takes a radically different direction: we teach all swimming strokes from day one.

We never shy away from strokes that others consider “too difficult,” such as butterfly or the intricacies of breaststroke kick mechanics. Instead, our entire curriculum is anchored around progressive practice and the Individual Medley (IM) framework developing versatile, balanced, and confident swimmers for life.

1. Demystifying Butterfly: Progressive Practice Over Perfection

The primary reason conventional lessons delay butterfly is the assumption that it requires immense muscular brute force. When taught as a completed, full-power stroke to an unprepared child, that is true.

When broken down through progressive motor learning, however, the foundational movements are intuitive and natural for young bodies:

  • The Natural Dolphin Undulation: Young children intuitively understand body rhythm. Long before coordinating a double-arm recovery, we teach children how to undulate through their chest and hips on dry land and in shallow water.
  • Core Buoyancy Awareness: Practicing dolphin kicks on the front and back teaches a swimmer how to press their chest down and elevate their hips, a core aquatic skill that immediately improves body position in front crawl and backstroke.
  • Low-Stress Progression: By introducing short, playful repetitions with teachers directly in the water, children view butterfly as an exciting adventure rather than an intimidating obstacle.

2. The Individual Medley Philosophy: Maximum Variation for Complete Athleticism

Our coaching philosophy intentionally mirrors the Individual Medley (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Front Crawl) because aquatic literacy demands multi-directional movement:

  • Neurological Variety: Repeating a single stroke for weeks leads to mental boredom, physical fatigue, and muscle imbalances. Alternating between the long-axis rotation of freestyle/backstroke and the short-axis wave mechanics of butterfly and breaststroke stimulates broad neuromuscular adaptation.
  • Symmetrical Muscular Development: Front crawl primarily engages the lats and shoulders. Breaststroke strengthens adductors and hip mobility. Butterfly develops thoracic flexibility and core stability. Medley training creates balanced, resilient bodies with a drastically reduced risk of repetitive strain injuries.
  • Cross-Stroke Synergy: Every stroke informs the others. The rhythmic exhalation mastered in breaststroke improves breathing composure in front crawl. The ankle dorsiflexion drilled on our homework sheets accelerates spatial body awareness across every pool drill.

3. The BLABT Framework: Breaking Complexity into Steps

How do you introduce four complex strokes to beginners without overwhelming them?

We apply our proven BLABT progression across every single skill:

  1. Body Position: Establishing a horizontal, streamlined line in the water before adding movement.
  2. Legs: Developing rhythmic kick drive from the core, hip, and ankles.
  3. Arms: Teaching purposeful propulsion without excessive water drag.
  4. Breathing: Synchronising natural air exchange to maintain buoyant stability.
  5. Timing: Blending the mechanics into an effortless, repeatable rhythm.

Because our teachers are in the water offering continuous tactile guidance, children receive immediate micro-adjustments that make complex coordination click.

4. Swimmers for Life, Not Just Single-Stroke Specialists

Our goal has never been simply getting a child to “survive” a 25-metre length. Our ambition is to cultivate all-round aquatic competency.

A child who learns all four strokes grows up comfortable in any aquatic environment, whether they choose to join a local swimming club, enjoy wild dipping in Scottish lochs, play water polo, or simply swim for fitness into adulthood. They possess complete confidence because water is a natural element where they can move in every direction with poise and control.
