As the Scottish landscape begins to shake off the winter chill, our beautiful canals, lochs, and coastlines become an irresistible draw for families. There is nothing quite like a sunny afternoon by the water, but as experts in aquatic education, we know that the “Great Outdoors” demands a different level of respect than the local leisure centre.
The transition from a heated, blue-tiled pool to the dark, unpredictable waters of a loch is a significant one. This is why our curriculum at SwimEasy goes far beyond “learning to swim.” We focus heavily on Water Awareness. As shown in our recent Respect the Water video, knowing how to swim a length of front crawl is only half the battle. A child needs to understand Cold Water Shock, how to spot hidden currents, and the vital importance of “Float to Live.”
This mission is close to our hearts, which is why we are proud supporters of the Darcey Sunshine Foundation. They do incredible work in drowning prevention, reminding us all that swimming is the only sport that is also a literal life-saving skill.
Becoming a “Water Aware” Family
We encourage all our parents to be “Water Aware” this season. As the summer term gets underway, we will be sharing more information and leaflets to help educate parents, guardians, and children about the specifics of water safety. In the meantime, start the conversation at home:
- Talk about the difference: Discuss how a pond or loch differs from the swimming pool.
- Look for signs: Teach children to identify safety signage at local waterways.
- The Golden Rule: Never swim alone and always respect the power of the water.
When a child learns the SwimEasy Way, they aren’t just becoming a swimmer; they are becoming a smart, safe, and resilient explorer of the natural world.
